COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE MEDITERRANEAN AGRONOMIC INSTITUTE OF BARI AND MALTA CONTINUES

On 9th and 10th July a delegation from the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari (IAMB), led by the Director and General Secretary of CIHEAM in Paris, Cosimo Lacirignola, met the Maltese Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture Roderick Galdes and the Parliamentary Secretary for EU Funds Ian Borg.

During the meeting with the Hon. Galdes, both parts reviewed the collaboration being offered by the IAMB to draw up a new Maltese legislative framework that would provide for the safeguarding of the designation of origin, the creation of a register for traditional agricultural products and a system of checks and traceability.

The Embassy then organised a meeting with the Parliamentary Secretary for EU Funds, the Hon. Ian Borg, and both parts discussed the national programme of rural development and the related opportunities to enhance the income of Maltese producers also thanks to European funds.

After the signing of the memorandum of understanding with the Maltese Ministry for the Environment and Sustainable Development last February, the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari is providing Malta with necessary technical assistance in the field of enhancement of Maltese agricultural food products. This is helping Maltese authorities to record and better safeguard the local territorial origin of production in accordance with the recent EU regulations.
