Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi met today in Malta with his Maltese counterpart, Glenn Bedingfield. Their discussions focused on the protection of the European Union’s external borders, the establishment of European hubs in safe third countries, the fight against human trafficking networks, and the need for stronger European engagement with migrants’ countries of origin and transit to promote assisted voluntary returns, supported by dedicated European programmes. Minister Piantedosi stated that “Malta is a strategic partner in the Central Mediterranean. We share a common position on the key issues currently under discussion in Europe, including migration and security. In particular, we agree on the importance of complementing existing migration management mechanisms with innovative solutions.”
