MALTA – INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON DIABETES AND MICROVASCULAR DISEASE (16TH MAY 2014)

On Friday 16th May, the Ambassador of Italy Giovanni Umberto De Vito inaugurated the International Congress on Diabetes and Microvascular Disease held in Malta and organised by the pharmaceutical company ‘Menarini s.p.a.’. The event saw the participation of more than 200 doctors and medical specialists from several African countries and the Middle East, providing them with the opportunity to discuss innovative ways of curing this disease which in Malta alone hits around 10% of the population (the highest rate in the EU).

In his opening speech the Ambassador highlighted the growing importance of collaboration between Italy and Malta in the health sector. Indeed the field of healthcare represents one of the most promising and dynamic sectors in the excellent bilateral relations between the two countries. Besides the agreements signed with four Italian regions (Sicily, Tuscany, Lombardy and, recently, Umbria), a joint declaration was signed in Rome last January between the Maltese Minister for Health and his Italian counterpart, the Hon. Lorenzin, giving further impetus to new fields of collaboration.

The sectors of health, medical sciences and medical research are additional areas where to focus joint collaboration efforts, thus providing benefits for the patients and the public health systems. On the same day, the Ambassador assisted a delegation from the Istituto Superiore della Sanità led by its President Prof. Fabrizio Oleari. The delegation was received by the Maltese parliamentary secretary for Health, the Hon. Chris Fearne, and the talks focused on possible collaboration in conducting research on autism.
