The Italian Armed Forces continue with their effort of ensuring the rescue of human lives and the prevention and fight against human trafficking in the central and eastern Mediterranean.
During the brief visit of the Italian navy vessel “Sfinge”, engaged in the military-humanitarian operation of “Mare Nostrum”, the Ambassador Giovanni Umberto De Vito received the customary courtesy visit of the vessel’s commander, C.F. Pier Luca Salassa.
The Ambassador then made an inspection on board the vessel where he was welcomed by the commander and during which he brought his greetings to the crew members. An updated briefing followed on the course of action of the operation launched last October. The meeting was also attended by the Commander of the Italian Military Mission Col. Luca Mariz and the Commander of the Maltese Armed Forces Brig. Jeffrey Curmi who were informed on the results achieved and the recent rescue operations which saw the “Sfinge” vessel directly involved.
Thanks to Italy’s commitment during the year 2013 more than 43,000 people were rescued at sea, the majority of which came from Syria, Eritrea and Somalia. From the beginning of this year almost 7,000 migrants were intercepted and assisted by the Italian authorities in an unprecedented effort for the winter period.
Italy continues to insist on a greater common effort of the European countries and institutions to better cope with the flow of migrants from North Africa trying to reach the borders of the European Union.
