MALTA – ITALIAN COMPANIES CONTRIBUTE TO RESTORING FORT ST. ELMO IN VALLETTA TO ITS ORIGINAL SPLENDOUR

On 20th March 2014 the Ambassador of Italy Giovanni Umberto De Vito visited the ongoing restoration works at the historical Fort St. Elmo located at the tip of the capital city of Valletta.

The restoration project (carried out by the Italian companies Carron Costruzioni Generali S.p.a. of Treviso, Estia s.r.l. of Bastia Umbra specialised in the restoration of cultural heritage and the design studio Leonardo s.r.l. of Bologna in joint venture with the Maltese partner V & C Contractors Ltd) aims at restoring one of the principal fortifications on the island which witnessed some of the most important moments of Malta’s history. Together with the restoration works, the project includes the complete reconstruction of façades and some parts of the buildings inside the fort. In this way the fort will be housing a renovated museum of Malta’s military history, spaces for temporary exhibitions and relaxation areas together with the offices of the body entrusted with the safeguarding of the Maltese Heritage (Heritage Malta) and those of the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation.

The Ambassador congratulated the Italian companies involved in this project for their ability to promote abroad the Italian entrepreneurial excellence through their high technical expertise in an area of high specialization such as that of restoration. The project of Fort St. Elmo is only one of several other projects of renovation and enhancement recently awarded to Italian companies in the principal cities of Malta and Gozo.
