ITALY AND MALTA PROMOTE NEW ENERGY INTERCONNECTION IN THE MEDITERRANEAN

The Embassy of Italy welcomes the decision of the Government of Malta to fully support the energy interconnection between Europe and Tunisia (“ELMED” project). Rome and Valletta agreed to jointly promote in Brussels this project originating from an Italian-Tunisian initiative. The planned submarine power cable will benefit energy security in the European Union and North Africa.

The “ELMED” project will contribute to diversify energy sources and supply areas, reduce the environmental impact of energy production and foster regional collaboration between Mediterranean countries.

The Embassy highly appreciates the support expressed by the Government of Malta to the European Commission. This follows intense bilateral consultations at political and technical level. «Working together on this new infrastructure – declared Ambassador Giovanni Umberto De Vito – confirms the common determination of Italy and Malta to strengthen cooperation between Europe and North Africa in strategic sectors of mutual interest».
