MINISTERIAL CONFERENCE ON SUPPORT TO LEBANESE ARMED FORCES (ROMA, 17TH JUNE 2014) 

In the context of the Italy’s commitment to promoting greater stability, security and development in the Mediterranean, the Italian Government hosted on 17th June the Ministerial Conference on Support to Lebanese Armed Forces. The Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini presided over the Conference, held under the auspices of the United Nations General Secretary Ban Ki-Moon. The Conference saw the participation of more than 40 delegations.

Italy offered a significant contribution to the action being taken by the United Nations in Lebanon and General Portolano was appointed Force Commander of the UNIFIL peace mission.

According to UNHCR the Syria crisis is having serious repercussions on Lebanon, becoming the country with the highest concentration of refugees in the world (178 refugees per 1,000 inhabitants i.e. almost one in five inhabitants is a refugee) [*].
