On 26 January 2014, the Ambassador of Italy to Malta Giovanni Umberto De Vito visited the construction site of the Italian company MDM Costruzioni Generali S.r.l . The visit took place within the framework of Italy’s commitment to supporting the principal Italian businesses active in the various economic sectors abroad, including in Malta. The Italian company, hailing from Salerno, is working on a joint venture with the local company Bonnici Group on the huge underground network of tunnels and canals aimed at channelling rain water more efficiently to the sea and reducing flooding in Malta.
The first project involves the construction of an approximately 11km tunnel starting at Attard and Naxxar and ending up at Ta’ Xbiex, the value of which will be more than 23 million euros. A second project will be seeing the construction of a 2km tunnel spanning from Zabbar to Marsascala with an expense of 6 million euros.
The Italian company’s know-how and technical expertise enabled it to win the tenders for the design and construction of the two tunnels announced by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (previously the Ministry of Resources and Rural Affairs) and forming part of the National Flood Relief Project launched by the Maltese Government in 2011. The whole project, which will cost almost 53 million euros, is co-financed by the European Union. Works will be nearing completion by the end of 2014.
