On 16th December the Ambassador of Italy to Malta Giovanni Umberto De Vito met the managing director of Italpress news agency, Gaspare Borsellino, and the head editor, Italo Cucci, on the occasion of the launching of the Malta News Agency, the first in Malta, as well as the opening of an Italpress foreign bureau on the island.
During the meeting, which was also attended by the person in charge of the Malta News Agency Martin Micallef, Borsellino explained that the publishing project aimed at taking advantage of Malta’s central position in the Mediterranean to create a news platform able to follow with attention the changes occurring particularly in the Northern African countries.
The following day, the directors of Italpress had a series of official meetings with the Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, the leader of the opposition Simon Busuttil and the President of PBS (Maltese broadcasting service) Tonio Portughese.
The creation of the Malta News Agency and the simultaneous opening of the Italpress foreign bureau came a few months after the launch of a closer collaboration between RAI and PBS, further strengthening the close ties that already exist between Italy and Malta even in the sector of communications and information.
