UNHCR: A SHARP INCREASE IN MIGRANT LANDINGS IN ITALY

The Rome Office of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees has stated that in the first eight months of this year approximately 22.000 immigrants arrived in Italy.

It is a considerable increase compared to the same period in 2012, during which arrivals registered amounted to less than 8000.

With regards to the main nationalities, one notes the sharp increase in Syrian immigrants (almost 4000 compared to 369 of last year), besides 5800 Eritreans and 2600 from Somalia.
