Malta, 22 July 2025 – The official visit to Malta by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, Hon. Francesco Lollobrigida, concluded successfully today. The visit, which took place on 21 and 22 July, aimed to promote the candidacy of Italian cuisine as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
The highlight of the mission occurred on the evening of 22 July, during an institutional event organized by the Italian Embassy in Malta in collaboration with the Italian Trade Agency (ICE). The initiative represented an important opportunity for dialogue and the promotion of Italy’s food and wine heritage, attracting a qualified audience including local authorities, business leaders, and civil society representatives.
Among those attending the event were the Maltese Minister of Agriculture Anton Refalo, ICE President Matteo Zoppas, and numerous professionals from the food service and agri-food distribution sectors, all active in promoting “Made in Italy” on the island.
During the evening, awards were presented to eleven Maltese restaurateurs and distributors who have distinguished themselves through their commitment to promoting Italian cuisine and products.
In his speech, Minister Lollobrigida emphasized the cultural, identity-based, and social value of Italian cuisine, describing it as a collective heritage deeply rooted in history and popular traditions. He also pointed out that UNESCO recognition would serve as a mark of quality and a globally distinctive element, strengthening the impact and strategic importance of Italy’s candidacy.
The Minister also drew attention to current issues facing the agri-food sector, including the protection of national wine production from European regulations deemed detrimental, such as the introduction of warning labels discouraging wine consumption.
The mission to Malta forms part of a broader initiative of cultural diplomacy and international promotion, aimed at strengthening Italy’s image and its food heritage worldwide.
