Subordinate employment

A subordinate employment visa allows to work in Italy as a dependant and, with few exceptions, requires a specific authorization from the Immigration Authorities (Nulla Osta Sportello Unico per l’Immigrazione – SUI). The authorization must be used within 6 months (4 months for applications falling under art. 27 of the legislative decree no. 286/1998).

How to request the visa

Applicants must provide:

  1. Application form duly filled up and signed.
  2. Valid passport or travel document (original plus photocopy), valid at least 3 months and with at least with two blank pages. The passport will be kept at the Consular office during the whole application process, and will be returned once the visa is approved and/or refused.
  3. Valid Maltese Residence Permit (original plus photocopy);
  4. Passport-size photo compliant with international ICAO standards, full front, white background, and not older than 6 months;
  5. Previous Schengen, USA, or UK visa copy;
  6. Copy of the authorization (Nulla Osta) of the Italian Immigration Office (Sportello Unico per l’ImmigrazioneSUI) released in the last 6 months (4 months requests falling under the legislative decree no. 286/1998, art. 27);
    • For highly skilled subordinate workers (Subordinate work/Blue Card), the applicant mustsubmit the originals (translated into Italian and duly legalized or apostilled) and a copy of the documentation used to request the “Nulla Osta SUI”. In particular, the following must be presented:
      • The educational diploma or professional qualification at post-secondary level; or, alternatively,
      • Evidence of the worker’s possession of a higher professional qualification, through a specific declaration from the employer requesting the EU Blue Card, accompanied by employment contracts and/or pay slips to be attached to the application; or, alternatively,
      • The requirements provided by legislative decree of November 6, 2007, no. 206, limited to regulated professions, whose practice is allowed only after registration with Orders or Colleges or with registers kept by public administrations or bodies, if registration is subject to possession of professional qualifications or verification of specific skills.
  1. Availability of a suitable lodging, which must be coherent with the period of stay of your visa application, must be provided.
    1. Proof of rental agreements registered with Agenzia delle Entrate;
    2. Hotel booking of no less than 30 days;
    3. Declarationby an Italian or foreign national legally residing in Italy, in accordance of art, 46 and 47 of DPR 349/1999, confirming that they have made available to the visa applicant a suitable accommodation that comply with the minimum standards laid down in the relevant regional law regarding public housing accommodation;
  2. (Only for Shengen Visa) An international medical insurance covering the entire stay with a minimum of 30.000 € coverage and full and unlimited coverage for hospitalization. Emergency repatriation flight as well as repatriation of mortal remains must be included. Detailed table of benefits must be provided;
  3. Confirmed flight booking or an itinerary. Please note that mobile screenshots are not allowed:
    1. If traveling by plane, the ticket must be printed directly from the airline operator showing passenger name, dates, from/to;
    2. If traveling by ferry, ticket reservations are required showing passenger’s name, dates, from/to;
    3. If traveling among multiple Schengen countries, travel ticket reservations are mandatory showing passenger’s name, dates, from/to between each country is mandatory.
