Appointments for a visa can be requested only upon confirmation of the participation or admission to an educational program in Italy.
Applicants must provide the following documentation, together with the specific documents required for each program, as indicated below.
- Application form duly filled up and signed.
- Valid passport or travel document (original plus photocopy), valid at least 3 months and with at least with two blank pages. The passport will be kept at the Consular office during the whole application process and will be returned once the visa is approved and/or refused.
- Valid Maltese Residence Permit (original plus photocopy);
- Passport-size photo compliant with international ICAO standards, full front, white background, and not older than 6 months;
- Cover letter;
- Travel ticket reservation. Please note that mobile screenshots are not allowed:
- If traveling by plane, the ticket reservation must be printed directly from the airline operator showing passenger name, dates, from/to;
- If traveling by ferry, ticket reservations are required showing passenger’s name, dates, from/to;
- If traveling among multiple Schengen countries, travel ticket reservations are mandatory showing passenger’s name, dates, from/to between each country is mandatory.
7) Proof of accommodation:
- Rental agreement or at least 15/30 days of hotel reservation.
- In case the applicant is staying with friends/family, a letter of invitation is required along with the host’s ID (valid permit of stay for non-European Union citizens) where the signature of the holder appears.
8) Health insurance with a minimum coverage of €30,000 for emergency hospital and repatriation expenses. If your current insurance company does not provide such coverage, you are requested to find an international insurance. Travel insurance, which must be issued in one of the Schengen countries, including every Schengen country;
9) Proof of financial means of support in Italy as per Ministry of Interior Directive 1.3.2000. The availability can be proven through: personal last 3 months bank statements or parents last 3 months’ bank statement alongside with original and a copy of birth certificate.
10) Visa fee (€50,00).
Specific documents
- Students enrolling in full Italian University Programs

- Duly completed and signed “Form A” downloaded from the following website: https://www.studiare-in-italia.it/studentistranieri/
- Declaration of value, issued by the Italian Consular office/Embassy having jurisdiction over the University/School that issued the certificate or CIMEA cartificate
- Exchange and mobility programs
- Original recent letter (not older than 1 month) of acceptance from University in Italy, specifying the type of course, number of weekly hours and dates;
- Original recent letter (not older than 1 month) from University in Malta confirming enrolment and applicant’s mobility program.
- Students independently attending a course on Italian Language/Culture
- Original recent letter (not older than 1 month) of acceptance from the host Institution/School in Italy, specifying the type of course, number of weekly hours and dates;
- Transcript of previous studies in the applicant’s home country.
- Internship program
- Documentation concerning the internship program:
- In the case of a curricular internship:
- A letter from the University or a vocational training center operating under an agreement with the Region or Province, or accredited, specifying the purpose of the stay and the exact duration of the internship;
- A copy of the training agreement between the sending educational institution, the host organization, and the student, indicating the program, conditions of placement and supervision, objectives and duration, resources made available to the applicant for their stay and for board and lodging expenses, return travel costs, and the stipulation of a health insurance policy;
- In the case of a non-curricular internship, concerning activities within an internship aimed at completing a professional pathway promoted by entities identified by regional regulations on extracurricular internships and guidance, the student must provide the internship training project duly stamped and approved by the competent Regional Department.
- In the case of a curricular internship:
- Transcript of previous studies in the applicant’s home country.
- Professional training
- Enrolment letter to a professional training course, mentioning its duration, subject of the training program, credentials etc.). The course must be coherent with previous education, organized by training entities authorized to perform professional training programs. The course cannot exceed the duration of 24 months and must aim to obtain a professional qualification or recognition of achieved skills. The training entity must declare in the enrolment letter that it has been accredited according to the abovementioned laws to carry out professional training courses;
- Transcript of previous studies in the applicant’s home country.
