{"id":5812,"date":"2026-07-13T13:36:24","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T11:36:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/amblavalletta.esteri.it\/?p=5812"},"modified":"2026-07-13T13:41:28","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T11:41:28","slug":"termination-of-validity-of-paper-identity-cards-for-travel-abroad-from-august-3-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amblavalletta.esteri.it\/en\/news\/dall_ambasciata\/2026\/07\/termination-of-validity-of-paper-identity-cards-for-travel-abroad-from-august-3-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"Termination of validity of paper identity cards for travel abroad from August 3, 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">Starting from 3 August 2026, the paper identity card will no longer be valid for expatriation purposes, regardless of the expiry date printed on the back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">Decree-Law No. 108 of 26 June 2026 has introduced several important changes:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"[li_&amp;]:mb-0 [li_&amp;]:mt-1 [li_&amp;]:gap-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ul]:pb-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ol]:pb-1 list-disc flex flex-col gap-1 pl-8 mb-3\">\n<li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\">A paper identity card that has not expired may still be used as an identification document in dealings with the Italian Public Administration and with entities providing public services, including Consulates;<\/li>\n<li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\">In cases of urgency, Italian Municipalities (Comuni) may issue a provisional identity document valid for expatriation, non-renewable, with a validity of no more than 6 months. This document may not be accepted by some foreign States: please check entry requirements on <a class=\"underline underline underline-offset-2 decoration-1 decoration-current\/40 hover:decoration-current focus:decoration-current\" href=\"https:\/\/www.viaggiaresicuri.it\/home\">Viaggiare Sicuri<\/a>;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">Please contact your nearest Consulate to find out how to obtain the new Electronic Identity Card (Carta di Identit\u00e0 Elettronica \u2013 CIE): <a class=\"underline underline underline-offset-2 decoration-1 decoration-current\/40 hover:decoration-current focus:decoration-current\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/it\/ministero\/struttura\/laretediplomatica\/\">https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/it\/ministero\/struttura\/laretediplomatica\/<\/a>. Dedicated appointments are available for those who do not hold any other identification documents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">As of 1 June, Italian citizens residing abroad (registered with AIRE) may also apply for the CIE at any Municipality in Italy, as provided for by Law No. 11 of 19 January 2026.
