Seafarers that need to obtain visas in order to be embarked on Italian or foreign ship \u2013 the latter heading to an Italian harbour or Italian waters, can apply for a seafarers\u2019 visa. Depending on the length of stay and on the vessel\u2019s flag, you may need a C-type visa (Schengen) or a D-type visa (National).<\/p>\n

Seafarers, in the performance of their duties, may apply for a visa as early as nine months<\/strong> prior to the scheduled start date of their journey.<\/p>\n

The request for a D-type visa may be forwarded if the seafarer will work on board of a vessel \u2013 regardless of its country of registration \u2013 that is supposed to stay for more than 90 days in Italy or within Italian waters.<\/p>\n

Requested documents<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Application form<\/strong> duly filled up and signed.<\/li>\n
  2. Passport-size photo<\/strong> compliant with international ICAO standards<\/a>, full front, white background, and not older than 6 months;<\/li>\n
  3. A valid passport<\/strong> (and a copy) satisfying the following criteria:\n
      \n
    1. Its validity must extend at least three months beyond the duration of the requested visa;<\/li>\n
    2. It must contain at least two blank pages;<\/li>\n
    3. It must have been issued within the last 10 years.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
    4. Previous Schengen, USA, or UK visa copy.<\/li>\n
    5. Copy of the Seafarers Identity Document<\/strong> (SID).<\/li>\n
    6. Formal request<\/strong> of the Shipowner (\u201cSociet\u00e0 armatrice\u201d) mentioning the following details:\n

      1. Name of the vessel;<\/li>\n
      2. Detailed indication of the work activity to be performed by the applicant;<\/li>\n
      3. Exact date of arrival of the vessel in the Italian harbor;<\/li>\n
      4. Exact date of embarkation of the applicant.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
      5. Letter from the employer (if different from the Shipowner) mentioning:\n
          \n
        1. Name and designation of the applicant;<\/li>\n
        2. Start of employment date;<\/li>\n
        3. Applicant\u2019s monthly salary.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
        4. Employment contract<\/strong> duly signed by both parties.<\/li>\n
        5. If the worker is not an employee of the Shipowner Company, a copy of the tender contract<\/strong> (Contratto d\u2019appalto) should be provided.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
