This relationship found significant expression as early as 1964, when, only a few months after Malta\u2019s independence, <strong>Italy was one of the very first countries to recognise the archipelago\u2019s independence and to establish a diplomatic mission. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Their <strong>shared belonging to the Mediterranean context<\/strong> makes close coordination essential on numerous issues on the European and international political agenda. From the <strong>management of migration flows<\/strong> to <strong>relations with the countries of the Southern Neighbourhood<\/strong>, Italy and Malta work together to foster political convergence and promote common positions, while safeguarding their respective national interests.<\/p>\n<p>The bilateral relationship is also supported by a significant economic and trade partnership, making <strong>Italy Malta\u2019s leading supplier country<\/strong> and the <strong>second-largest destination market for Maltese exports<\/strong>. The role of Italian companies is actively promoted by the Embassy of Italy and the Italian Trade Agency within the framework of <a href=\"https:\/\/amblavalletta.esteri.it\/en\/italia-e-malta\/diplomazia-economica\/\">economic diplomacy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In this perspective, cooperation with Malta is also of particular importance for Italy in the energy sector, contributing to the strengthening of Italy\u2019s role as a European energy hub through infrastructure cooperation projects such as the <strong>Italy\u2013Malta electricity interconnector<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Completing the framework of bilateral relations is the significant presence of the <strong>Italian community residing in the Maltese archipelago<\/strong>, which gives the relationship between the two countries a fundamentally important human dimension.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Bilateral relations between Italy and Malta are founded on a geographical, historical and cultural proximity that makes the bond between the two countries solid and constantly evolving.
